Utah homebirth Midwives need your help

Most of you know that I had my baby, Niels, at home. And it was a wonderful experience thanks mostly to my wonderful midwife Suzanne from BetterBirth. She & her staff are amazing, they actually treat you like a person & not a number. I highly recommend it & them & wish I could go back and have my others at home too. I know it's not for everyone but don't you think that we should have the right to decide where is best for us to have our babies? Well Sen Margaret Dayton R-Orem is fighting hard to make it nearly impossible.

In 2005 a bill was passed that licensed direct entry midwives. The original statute required that a physician member serve on the rule-writing committee. The Utah Medical Association selected this representative, but he never attended a single meeting. The Certified Nurse-Midwife member of the committee did attend, and voted to accept the current rules as written. But (wa wa) only after the rules entered the hearing process did the Utah Medical Association voice objections.

Now Sen Dayton wants to amend the bill to define what "normal pregnancies" are. Under her definition it would put many if not all of the LDEM's out of practice. Dayton said her bill simply aims to "set forth the definitions" not included in the original legislation and is not an attack on midwives (yeah right) Prior to having children of her own, Dayton worked for five years as a labor and delivery nurse. Her husband is a retired obstetrician. hmmmmmm-so she is pushing this bill which hurts midwives & parents to the benefit of MD's- like her husband.

She says she wants people to have a choice but she sees the choice of homebirth as "stay[ing] at home alone in the dark in the bathroom"

This is the Only legislation she is sponsoring this year- a bill that Only affects 1-2% of her constituency

You can Help!!

How you ask? if you live in Utah, easy: Please look here to find out who your house representative is by typing in your zip code. Look down and to the right to find an email address. You need only email your own representative. The majority of them do carefully read emails from constituents. Make sure to include your address in your e-mail, so they know that you are their constituent. And put in the subject line: Vote "No" to SB93S1!
If you live outside of Utah ask your family or friends who live there to write.

Please Please Please help! Even if homebirth is not for you please help those of us who do want to continue having a choice. If you want any more info on this you can email me and I'd be happy to put you in touch with my older sister who will hopefully in the future be able to practice as a midwife in Utah.

Look at that cute baby! Happy, Healthy & born at Home!

did I expect?

bless stephanie meyers heart and the casting dept hearts at summit entertainment.

But to keep it fair I think these cast pics are horrible! And who ever did their makeup, wardrobe and hair wasn't operating on a full tank. I looked up these actors on IMDb and they look a lot better in different pics. They should have hired jonathan canlas to take the pics & this girl (love her blog and style) to do the styling, and my sis Nic who always does amazing color to do the hair - how bad are those dye jobs?

I highly doubt I'll be seeing this movie, maybe when it comes out on dvd.

thanks Jan for letting me know- i emailed you my extreme reaction

what we did for v-day

A few days before we made these Valentines for some special people and sent them off. If you got one did you try the suckers? They were so good! And organic can't beat that.
The girls got these which said "be mine" on the back. Kail helped cut out the hearts and Lily picked out the beads and foam hearts and then glued them on
(this is Lily's after being worn all day and having to be restrung)

And the boys got these- I was pretty proud of myself for coming up with this, If you can't tell it's a real heart with a face (I know but it had to be somewhat cutesy). and on the back we put "I heart you"
The mini's got their own Valetines and I tried, in vain, to take a nice picture of them

Niels looking to Kail for comfort, poor neglected child, with one sock and clothes that are either too big or too small. Then Lily needed attention and decided to pout in the corner
And Kail made fun of Lily standing in the corner which made her scream louder

Then we made these cookies-yummmmmmm and made the frosting pink to be more festive We ate more than just a few and handed the rest out to our neighbors- funny story with a lesson to be learned: if an old lady from New York decides to give your kids hugs and kisses for the cookies they just delivered don't let her go for the baby in your arms he'll end up getting a wet one right on the mouth and then you get to watch and wait for the next week or so to make sure he didn't catch anything.

We hope you all had a sa-weet Valentine's Day!

Is there any way to justify buying these for Lily?

lidia pant in maxim denim by ses petites mains via Orange Button

Madeleine trench from Crewcuts

And while I'm buying those for Lily I'll just run over to everyone's all time fav Anthropologie and pick me up these beauties:

I have a love-hate relationship with the internet

I should be cleaning

Lets see how many posts I can do in one day. You know you are addicted to blogging when all your thoughts are in blog form. And now that things have settled down a bit I've got all these things I want to blog about, like my kids but I hate my digital camera and I'm scared to take my film to anyone here so I'll blog about some other things first like my favorite kids show: Jacks Big Music Show on Noggin. I love this show. And I love it even more now that Niels is dancing to all the songs. It's so cute. I love their music videos & especially the little kids in them that dance. I love the little puppets they are so unusual. I think it's great all the types of music they play. My kids want to play all the instruments. Yesterday Lily was using a plastic red bat as a guitar, violin & cello.
Here's one video my kids like to rock out too (hey is that Steve?)

Love this one, reminds me of Jackson 5

All types of music

And of course Laurie Berkner:

I highly recommend letting your kids watch this show constantly. Also be warned you will become a children's music snob- the wiggles just won't cut it anymore.

It could be worse

I hate hate hate when someone tells me that. My mom does all the time. & I've come to realize that moms are almost always right. And she was right on this one too. I was having the worst week two weeks ago. We were having to move, (stupid military) and Gary was going to be taking his biggest test to date on the day we were moving. The stress was piling on. So it didn't help when Friday came we all started coming down with colds. Then Niels decided to get up at 3 in the morning and stay up until six two nights in a row. So Saturday night at about 5 am I had had it. I decided to tell Heavenly Father that I was done. It was too much. I was starting to feel sick, I hated Fayetteville, I hated my husbands career path, I hated eveything and I couldn't do it anymore. I was begging him to help me, to make something change, to please just make Niels go to sleep- anything. I got my answer in the morning. After getting about two more hours of sleep I woke up feeling a hundred times worse, not being able to breath and my throat hurt. My head and neck were aching (where's a chiropractor when you need one?). I was super sick. Great I thought, this is perfect how am I supposed to do anything. As the day wore on and I became even more sick but still having to take care of the three kids and all the moving plans, the spirit let me have it- "see" he said "it could be worse" I had my kick in the pants moment. And I was humbled. Yes it could be worse, always.

as a side note I wasn't sure I wanted to post this after writing it because I know a lot of you are having extremely harder lives/trials right now- harder than I could possibly imagine. But in the end I decided to share it because I have been complaining a lot to some of you (Mom, Jana, Nic, Wendy - and the list goes on) but because of this horrible/wonderful experience I've made a change and hopefully you won't dread calling me any more.

President Gordon B Hinckley

Prophetic Passing

I imagine he's running to Marjorie now,
Yes, running, not waving his cane.
I see him embracing his father and mother
While they keep repeating his name.

I see him now meeting his forebears,
Brother Brigham and Joseph are there.
Sweet reunion of prophets, united by service
That only such noble men share.

I see him embraced by the Savior
While Father says, "Good and well done.
So faithful in stalwart endurance, I welcome
My noble, most excellent son."

I then hear the ripples of laughter
As he says the reception's just fine,
But he hopes that he'll get an assignment or two
Since there's no need to waste any time.

I hear his clear voice in the stillness
At the close of this sweet Sabbath day,
Have faith and move forward – there's work to be done.
President Hinckley would want it that way.
