Niels' birthday

I'm finally getting these pictures up. Niels' first birthday was a lot of fun. Since the weather was so nice we decided to go swimming. & Gary surprised us by finishing his studying early & joining us at the pool.
Kail loved it & would not get out of the water even though he started to freeze

Lily wouldn't get in the water

And all Niels wanted to do was drink the water so he was pulled out. by that Wednesday he had a fever- I was mostly blaming it on his teething but I don't think the pool water helped-yuck!

Kail & Lily couldn't resist helping Niels open his presents

I don't think Niels minded

His favorite toy of all was this bug band, he was so happy to be encouraged to bang on something.

and just like we did for Kails 1st birthday, we got Niels some balls (he he)

I got the cake from Whole Foods and wasn't expecting much but it was like a miniature Costco cake- the giant chocolate kind- mmmm

Niels mainly played with it- he's not a huge fan of chocolate or other sweets

Lily on the other hand was begging for a third piece, I had to put my foot down & she wasn't too happy about it

I still can't believe how time flies!

Lily, again

Tonight was crazy, I've decided my crazy comes in waves. Everything is calm then everything is crazy then it's calm again. I was letting the kids stay up a little later than usual so they could play outside with our cute neighbor. They were all getting tired and ornery then Lily goes and steps onto an ant hill. Now the ants out here aren't like the cute little calm, run away black ants we have in Utah. The ants out here are vicious, you step on us we'll run up your legs before you know it and bite you, red ants. & we figured this out the very first night we were in NC, because lily stepped onto one of their hills. But bless her heart she's done it at least 3 more times since not counting tonight. So after she stepped in it tonight she went screaming down the sidewalk when I caught up to her she still had quite a few of the little buggers hanging on. We finally got them all off and Lily insisted on a bath- "just to make sure"

After the bath while I was helping her get her jammies on she said in a matter of fact/big girl/know it all voice, "do those ants think that I am their food? NO I am a girl (you must know that Lily pronounces her "r's" as "uh" so it's more like guhl) I am not tasting like food. And rhinoceuhuses (rhinoceroses) are animals!" I'm not sure where the rhino comment came from but apparently it had something to do with the ants. I was trying my hardest to keep a straight face because she was so serious about it & you could tell she was still upset about the whole thing. But it was so dang cute.

& speaking of Lily's inability to say her "r's" this is her favorite book to read and when she reads it with me she sounds like she's from the Bronx:
"thehs a shahk in the pahk pup bahks"

We always get a good laugh, & don't worry Lily, loving the attention, laughs right along with us.

almost like home

Gary is gone for 3 weeks- surprise surprise, but before he left we stole him away from his studies and had some much needed family time. One of Gary's friends from his course took Gary to the Cape Fear river trail to do a little rucking. When they returned Gary told me that it's almost like being home-I did not believe him. But we decided the kids needed some fresh non-apartment compound air so we went. And Gary was right it was almost like being up the canyon in Utah, except this was in the middle of ghettoville. Yea for people who are smart enough to preserve nature.
Kail had a ball- the trail winds up and down and is so steep in places they have signs telling you to walk your bike
Lily and Niels enjoying the good life
Gary loves having his picture taken
Lily sang for us the whole way & said hi to everyone we passed

Gary said that I should start taking the kids there and go walking & told me not to worry because the police patrol there all the time and he passed at least three when he was rucking with John. I'm not sure that's a good thing.

Kail & Mallory sitting in a tree....

Kail has his first crush and it is the cutest thing! The other night he came out of his room and said, "mom what if the Spiderwick Chronicles* were real, wouldn't that be cool?" I said yes then he said, "do you know what my favorite part is?" I proceeded to name off every gruesome creature in the book I could remember. When he realized I was way off he started giggling. And I got suspicious, and asked him what it was. He giggled even more and said "no, I can't tell you" And I told him to just tell me, so after a few more giggles he covered his eyes and said really fast, "Mallory!" oh it was the best- and still continues to be. If he's sad about Gary being gone or missing E, all I have to say is "Malloooorrrryyyyy" and he gets a huge grin on his face. I love it!
*for those of you who don't know it's a book series look here, it was also made into a movie. Kail wanted to see the movie but I told him he had to read the books first so Gary read all five books & then some every night to Kail then took him to the movie.

A child is a curly dimpled lunatic -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Every once in a while Kail will have toys lined up in rows anywhere he can put them.
This time it was Lily. I asked her "where are all the animals going?"
she replied " nowhere, ovbiousme" (obviously)
